Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala - North America

Pacaya is an active complex volcano that is located in Guatemala, North America. It first erupted approximately 23,000 years ago, and has exploded at least 23 times ever since the Spanish occupation of Guatemala. Being inactive for a period of a century, it again exploded viciously in the year 1965, and has continuously been exploding from that time.

A great deal of its action is Strombolian, however sporadic Plinian explosions also take place, every so often showering the adjoining city of Antigua with its residue. This city is positioned roughly about 25-30 km south of Guatemala City.

It is a popular tourist spot owing to its proximity to Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala. The volcano and its neighboring area now contained by the Pacaya National Park, that has shaped to administer tourism in the area. It is a significant step that has lead to the generation of income from tour groups, who are levied with a nominal entrance charge to the park.
